ATLETA City 2 Surf Training – Great First Week!

It’s that time of year again, when the mornings get colder and waking up gets that little bit harder. Winter generally marks a significant decline in outdoor fitness participation – luckily, however, ATLETA is running our morning City 2 Surf training all through winter, up until race weekend on August 9.

Need an excuse to get out of bed of a morning? We’ve had a great week of training here at ATLETA! We were also lucky enough to have the great people at IsoWhey Sports come down and give away some free product last Saturday, the 6th. After a successful first week of City 2 Surf training sessions, we’re pumped to continue training such a great group over the coming months, in the lead up to the City 2 Surf.

4km Time Trial:

Tuesday June 2 saw us kick off our program with a 4km time trial. It was a cold morning, with some weather reports recording lows down to -2 degrees (with wind chill)…Our group smashed out some great times however, and even managed to break a sweat! 4km time trials are a great way to track progress across the duration of our training program, as they are a reliable indicator of cardiovascular endurance and fitness. An improvement in a 4km time trial time highly correlates to improved cardiovascular function, which encompasses a host of physiological and psychological health benefits (see blog here for more information on these benefits).

1km Intervals and IsoWhey:

Who said long weekends are for sleeping in? On Saturday morning we were lucky enough to have the guys at IsoWhey Sport there to support us through our four by 1km intervals. They provided product, motivation and even joined in – and smashed it! It was a tough workout, but times continued to drop each interval. Massive improvements were seen by regulars and new faces alike. Longer intervals are a great way to improve race-pace, and get your body used to holding those higher speeds for longer duration. Coupled with Race-Pace runs, this is the perfect way to improve your lactate threshold and improve your longer distance running speeds (click here for more information and a better explanation of this).
