Wanderlust, Eoin Finn and the Benefits of Yoga.

Lifestyle writer Lil Mercanti spent last weekend “blissing out” at Wanderlust, but whilst she was there she took the time to talk about the benefits of yoga with one of the best in the business.

Eoin Finn is a yogi and surfer from Vancouver, BC and we caught up with him after taking part in his Superflow Surf Inspired Yoga class to talk about the benefits of yoga, misconceptions of yoga, and how it can benefit your training for sport.

As an avid surfer, Eoin knows how his yoga practice on the mat translates in the surf. We asked Eoin for his top five benefits to be gained from bringing yoga into your fitness regime. Here’s what he had to say.

1. More Range of Motion
2. Better Healing Capacity
3. Neuromuscular Patterning – Learning fine motor skills and refined brain to muscle connections.
4. Being more centered, learning the skills of grace under pressure and how to stay in a positive mindset.
5. Breath control.

As for how introducing a yoga practice will help your progress with surfing or other sports, Eoin explains it will increase range of motion where it is lacking and strengthen places that suffer atrophy. It can also help fix side to side imbalances in the body caused by one-sided sports like tennis. Ultimately, Eoin says it will ensure your joints are functioning optimally now and into old age.

So what does Eoin Finn say the most common misconception about yoga is? That it is all about flexibility. If you think you’re too inflexible to partake in a yoga practice – you’re wrong. ‘Saying you’re too inflexible to do yoga, is like saying you’re too dirty to take a shower.’

Eoin adds that another misconception is that it is only serious. In reality, it is a matter of finding the right yoga instructor and the right practice that can provide what you’re looking for.

“Yoga does have a spiritual element, but you’ve got to find a level that’s comfortable to you. Yoga is vast enough that it can adapt to where you’re at. Saying you’re going to yoga is like saying you’re going to see music. It could be Celine Dion or it could be ACDC.”

So, if you’re thinking of bringing a yoga practice into your fitness regime, take the time to find a practice that suits your needs. Don’t rush into it, don’t rush out of it and don’t take it too seriously.
