Why exercise physiology, not generic fitness

The body that plays good golf at 50 doesn't thrive at 70 by accident.

Most fitness advice for older athletes is recycled junior-athlete training. It treats stiff backs, sore shoulders and lost rotation as inconvenient — when really they're the central problem to solve. Atleta starts there.

Each Playbook is built on the same evidence-based framework Neil uses in clinic — assess, restore range, load progressively, then add power. Sport-specific where it counts. Universal where it doesn't. Designed so you can train at home, with simple equipment, and feel the change.

The Atleta Method

Three principles. Four sports. One outcome.

PRINCIPLE 01

Range first, force second

Mobility before strength, strength before power. Skip the order and you build force on top of compensation patterns — that's how injuries happen.

PRINCIPLE 02

Sport-specific where it counts

Golf needs hip-shoulder separation. Tennis needs rotator cuff endurance. Surfing needs paddle capacity. Running needs tendon resilience. Each Playbook drills its own demands.

PRINCIPLE 03

Sustainable, not seasonal

The goal is the next decade, not the next round. Every program ends with a 12-month maintenance plan you can carry forward yourself.

Choose Your Sport

Four Playbooks. One philosophy.

Each program is the same evidence-based 12-week structure, drilled into the demands of your sport. Every Playbook starts at $79 and includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Meet Neil Russell

Twenty years rebuilding athletes. Now self-directed for you.

Neil is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and ESSA-registered practitioner based on the Central Coast of NSW. For two decades he's worked with surgeons, GPs and clubs to help golfers, tennis players and surfers play meaningfully better — particularly through the decades when most athletes quietly fade.

The Atleta Playbooks are the same protocols he uses in clinic, distilled into a self-directed format anyone can follow.

Frequently Asked

The questions our members ask most.

I play more than one of these sports — which Playbook should I start with?
Start with whichever sport you play most often, or whichever has the loudest niggle right now. The first four weeks of every Playbook overlap heavily — they're all building the same mobility and core foundations — so the sport-specific divergence comes later. If you play all three regularly, the Coastal Athlete Bundle is the most economical path.
How do I know if I'm too old to start?
If you're still playing your sport — even casually — you can start the Playbook. Every exercise has graded variations from gentle to challenging. Our oldest current member started at 78. The Tier 2 consult is the safest entry point if you're unsure.
What if I have an active injury?
Book Tier 2 (Playbook + Consult) for whichever sport applies. Neil will assess your specific situation in the 1:1, modify the program around the injury, and flag anything that needs your GP or local AEP first. We don't recommend Tier 1 self-paced if you have an active injury or recent surgery.
How much time per week does it actually take?
Three structured sessions of 35–45 minutes, plus a 10-minute daily mobility flow. About 2.5 hours a week. The mobility flow is designed to fit into the morning routine you already have.
Do I need a gym?
No. Every Playbook runs from a clear corner of a room with a mat, a resistance band, and a single dumbbell or kettlebell. Substitutions are listed for everything if you don't have specific equipment.
What kind of results can I actually expect?
Most members who complete the full program in good faith feel meaningful changes by week six — better range, less morning stiffness, more energy in their sport. Specific outcomes depend on your sport: golfers commonly report 8–15 yards added off the tee; many tennis players see meaningful reduction in elbow symptoms in 6–10 weeks; surfers often report a meaningful increase in paddle endurance. Individual results vary; that's why every Playbook carries a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The next decade of your sport starts today.

Twelve weeks from now, you can be moving better, hurting less, and looking forward to your next round, set or session.
