Why runners break down

Injury isn't bad luck. It's four trainable systems quietly under-trained at once.

If you've battled shin splints, runner's knee, ITB pain, plantar fasciitis or a stubborn Achilles — that's not the running. It's hip stability, calf capacity, glute strength and tendon resilience under-prepared for the load you're asking of them. Trained correctly, every one of those systems responds at any age.

This Playbook is the systematic, evidence-based program Neil uses in clinic with runners — distilled into a self-directed twelve-week format. It's built for runners who want to stay on the road for the next twenty years, not chase a quick fix between injuries.

How the program is built

Four pillars of a runner-ready body.

PILLAR 011

Mobility

Hips, ankles, thoracic spine. The range to run tall without compensating through the knees.

PILLAR 022

Stability

Single-leg control and hip stability. The ability to land cleanly stride after stride.

PILLAR 033

Strength

Glutes, calves, posterior chain. The capacity to absorb load and protect the tendons.

PILLAR 044

Power

Plyometrics and elastic capacity. The spring that translates strength into a smoother, faster stride.

Built for runners who refuse to slow down.

This is for you if…

  • You run regularly (or want to) and you're tired of niggles cutting your training short
  • You want to add miles or pace without breaking down
  • You're willing to commit 30–45 minutes, three times a week
  • You want a structured program — not random YouTube exercises

This isn't for you if…

  • You have an active injury or recent surgery — book a consult first
  • You want a single-session "PB in 7 days" hack
  • You're not willing to do three strength sessions per week consistently
Neil Russell, Accredited Exercise Physiologist
Meet Neil Russell

Twenty years rebuilding athletes. Now self-directed for you.

Neil is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and ESSA-registered practitioner based on the Central Coast of NSW. For two decades he's worked with surgeons, GPs and clubs to help runners, golfers, tennis players and surfers play meaningfully better — particularly through the decades when most athletes quietly fade.

The Atleta Playbooks are the same protocols he uses in clinic, distilled into a self-directed format anyone can follow.

Frequently Asked

The questions runners ask us most.

I'm a beginner runner — is this for me?
Yes. The Playbook works whether you're building up to your first 5km or training for your tenth marathon. Every exercise has graded variations from gentle to challenging. The Tier 2 consult is the safest entry point if you're brand new and want a program scaled to your starting point.
What if I have an active injury?
Book Tier 2 (Playbook + Consult). Neil will assess your specific situation in the 1:1, modify the program around the injury, and flag anything that needs your GP or local AEP first. We don't recommend Tier 1 self-paced if you have an active injury or recent surgery.
How much time per week does it actually take?
Three structured strength & mobility sessions of 30–45 minutes, plus a 10-minute daily mobility flow. About 2 hours a week on top of your running. The mobility flow is designed to fit into the morning routine you already have.
Do I need a gym?
No. The full program runs from a clear corner of a room with a mat, a resistance band, and a single dumbbell or kettlebell. Substitutions are listed for everything if you don't have specific equipment.
What kind of results can I actually expect?
Most runners feel meaningful changes by week six — better range, less morning stiffness, fewer niggles, smoother stride. Many report holding pace later in long runs and recovering faster between sessions. Individual results vary; that's why every Playbook carries a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Can I do this alongside my regular running?
Yes — the program is designed to support your running, not replace it. The pre-run warm-up replaces whatever you currently do before heading out. Schedule the three weekly strength sessions on easier running days or rest days where possible.
What happens after the 12 weeks?
Every Tier includes a 12-month maintenance plan. After 12 weeks, you'll have the routine, the knowledge, and the body to maintain the gains yourself. Tier 3 members get a personalised maintenance roadmap from Neil at the Week 12 review.

The next decade of your running starts today.

Twelve weeks from now, you can be moving better, recovering faster, and looking forward to every run.
